In today’s Honolulu Advertiser, there’s a story “Honolulu still tops list of costliest U.S. cities,” which confirms what most of us already know… Hawaii is an expensive place to live, and do business.  Hawaii has the highest energy costs, real estate prices, and state taxes in the nation. This article reminded me of a book written almost 20 years ago called “The Price of Paradise.” Sadly, many of the problems and conditions described in this book exist to this day.

I was fortunate to get close enough to see Emperor Akihito’s plane when he visited last week, and I also got to see him disembark. But unfortunately, I couldn’t capture a clear image of the Emperor and Empress.

Still, it was very exciting to be that close.

先週の天皇皇后ハワイ訪問の時の様子。　ラッキーにも近くでお二人の飛行機が到着するところを見れました。　天皇皇后が飛行機から降りてこられる様子は残念ながらカメラにはきれいに撮れていませんでした。　そこまではラッキーではなかったみたい。

でも、いい経験でした。

ノースショアーの一本道を走っているとププケアビーチ公園近くで第３１回フイオヘエナル独立記念日パドルボードスダンドアップパドルレースに遭遇した。数百のレース参加者がサンセットビーチからワイメアまでの距離を競っている様子がわかるでしょうか。

The 28-story missile X-Band defense radar

Sea-based X-band Radar (aka “the giant golf ball”)is heading back out to sea amid reports that the North Koreans appear to be preparing for a long-range missile test on July 4 (Independence Day).

The 28-story missile X-Band defense radar is designed to work with ground-based missile interceptors on the island of Kauai to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles during their final phase of flight. The radar is described by Lt. Gen Trey Obering (director of United States Missile Defense Agency) as being able to track an object the size of a baseball over San Francisco in California from the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, approximately 2,900 miles (4,700 km).

In the event we’ll need to use the missile defense system, let’s hope they hit this one out of the park.

海上Xバンドレーダー （通称 ジャイアントゴルフボール）がまた海の真ん中に戻され　７月４日（独立記念日）の北朝鮮長距離ミサイルテストの動きを測ります。

２８階相当のミサイル防御のXバンドレーダーはカワイ島の地上ミサイル迎撃機と連合操作され、飛行しているミサイルの最終飛行段階で打ち落とすようになっている。　オバーリング　トレイ中将（米国ミサイル防衛庁長官) はこのレーダーは野球ボールサイズのものをアメリカ横断距離約2,900マイル（4,700キロ）（カルフォル二ア州サンフランシスコからバージニア州チェサピークまで）離れてでも探知できると述べている。

もしミサイル防御システムを使わないといけなくなった場合は、野外ホームランにして欲しいものだ。

It’s been a while since I visited Waikiki Beach, I was a little surprised to see how crowded it was. There were thousands of people lounging on the sand, surfing, and taking the catamaran tours. If there’s a recession, there was no sign of it in Waikiki.

久しぶりにワイキキビーチに寄って　少し驚いたのはたくさんの人であふれていた事。　何千の人がビーチでリラックス、サーフィング、ボートツアーなどを楽しんでいました。　ワイキキには不況の兆しがないようです。

The 15th Annual Honolulu Festival will be held throughout Waikiki March 13 through March 15. The three day extravaganza occurs every year in March on a weekend from Friday through Sunday.  Dance performances and traditional art demonstrations are displayed by artisans from Japan, Australia, Tahiti, Philippines, Republic of China (Taiwan), Korea, Hawaii and the rest of the United States. The Festival culminates with a spectacular parade down Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki, Hawaii.  This year’s festival is expected to draw 4,700 visitors.

第１５回ホノルルフェスティバルが３月１３日から１５日に掛けてワイキキ中で開催されます。３日間この豪華なショーは毎年３月の金曜日から日曜日に催されます。　ダンスパフォーマンスや伝統的な実地教授は日本、オーストラリア、タヒチ、フィリピン、台湾、韓国、ハワイそしてアメリカ本土から来た職人によって発揮されます。このフェスティバルのクライマックスはカラカウア通りの壮観なパレードです。ことしは４千７００人の訪問客が見込まれています。

The NFL is bidding Aloha after 30 years of hosting the Pro Bowl in Hawaii.  Next year’s Pro Bowl will be in Miami, and the location after that is uncertain.  In December 2008 ESPN article, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman is hopeful  that Honolulu will be included in a multi-city rotation for future Pro Bowls.

Perennial Pro Bowl players like Peyton Manning and Ray Lewis know a good thing when they see it.  Manning’s quote:  “I don’t know what the economic factors are that come into play, but I know the times I’ve come over here, it’s a special week.”

NFL選手プロボールをハワイ希望
NFLは３０年もプロボールをハワイで開催してきた。来年はマイアミで行われることが決まり、その次の年はまだ未定。２００８年１２月のESPNの記事では、ホノルルの市長ムーフィー　ハナマンは将来ローテーションされるプロボール開催地にホノルルが選ばれることを期待している。
プロボール選手ペイトン　マニングやレイ　ルイスはハワイからプロボールがなくなることに意見している。マニング選手は“プロボールの経済的影響等はわからないが、いつもプロボールでハワイに来るときは自分にとって特別な週”と語っていた。

A home in Aina Haina is up for consideration as the “messiest home in america.” The Style Networks hit show “Clean House”

The house is stacked with bins of books. Toys cover the floor. The dining table has become a storage facility. The pantry is filled with old eats, and all the rooms are overstuffed, having lost their original purpose as places of comfort and relaxation.

The family has five cars — but can’t find the keys to two of them.

ハワイの家　スタイルネットワークの”クリーンハウス”に取り上げられる
アイナハイナのある家は”アメリカの一番散らかっている家“に選ばれ、スタイルネットワークのヒット番組”クリーンハウス”に掲載された。
家の内は本の山。おもちゃ等で足の踏み場がなく、ダイニングテーブルは物置き場に変ってしまっていた。パントリーは古い食べ物でいっぱい、部屋中物であふれしまって、家本来の目的　リラックスして落ち着ける場所の意味が完全に失われていた。
この家庭では５台の車があるが、そのうち２台の鍵が行方不明。
